Scarlet
Medusa
The
only animal who can achieve a human dream
|

Introduction
Since ancient times, people have been searching
for eternal life. Is it only an unattainable dream? Among marine
animals, many have hidden abilities, but at the end of the last
century, the immortal jellyfish was discovered (Piraino et al.
1996) within multicellular animals through the study of life
history. The animal is one of hydrozoans called Scarlet Medusa,
Turritopsis nutricula McCrady. NHK (a major broadcast
company in Japan) reported the animal as one of marine animals
filled with treasures in a special TV program. In addition,
scarlet medusae appears in novels and TV dramas. A dream of
humankind may come true in this century as we are in the world
where the technologies advance ever so rapidly. I, Kobota, continue
introducing the immortality of scarlet medusa through public
lectures, TV shows, radio programs, newspapers, and so on, in
addition to my regular research for the achievement of such
dream.

A scarlet medusa, which has
rejuvenated six times, is specially displayed at the university
aquarium. Let me introduce the exhibition. Here is the entrance
of the exhibition.

Contents of the exhibition: it
is only a few mm big; therefore, an attached magnifying glass
is needed to see the polyps. They are inside the red circle.
Compared to the adults, the polyps are very small.

Today, I asked a photographer
to take some pictures and he did. The polyps of scarlet medusa
stick out inside the red circle
